Review: Re:Zero, "Regulus Corneas" (Season 3, Episode 12)
It’s impossible to defeat a foe who takes no damage and is basically invincible. Right?
Wrong. Subaru Natsuki finds a way to defeat Regulus Corneas, the Sin Archbishop of Greed.
With the ability of Lion’s Heart, Greed can stop the flow of time around his body, allowing him to endure attacks with no repercussions.
Well, how is that possible?
Subaru figures out that it has to do with his 53 wives. What’s the purpose of having so many? Besides being greedy, of course.
After Emilia talks to the main wife, Sylphy, about taking down Regulus, all of the wives admit they hate him and wish they could return to their regular lives. Before leaving, Emilia leaves a spirit with Sylphy—which is when she realizes something is wrong.
Sylphy’s heart is beating, but Greed’s is too. Inside her. Who would’ve thought that Regulus’ unbeatable nature comes from transferring his heart from wife to wife, resulting in him avoiding any harm on the battlefield.
The wives are all prepared to end their lives to get rid of Regulus, but Emilia comes up with a solution. She freezes all of them, ultimately causing Greed’s heart to transfer into someone else’s body. Unfortunately…it ends up attaching to her own heart.
This realization had me in shock—is Emilia going to end her life to defeat Greed? She even produces an ice dagger, proving her loyalty to take him down. However, something happens that I would’ve never expected. Subaru uses his Unseen Hand, given to him from Petelgeuse, to enter Emilia’s body and destroy Greed’s heart.
Without anywhere to relocate his heart, Regulus has to put it in his own body. Now, when he gets attacked, he’s going to sustain injuries. Even if Greed stops his heart from beating, he can only freeze it so many times before it kills him.
To get revenge on Greed for making all his wives suffer, Emilia makes a massive ice hammer and sends him flying into a concrete wall. She proceeds to punch him 53 times (to avenge his 53 wives) as she should. GO GIRL!!
I’m honestly extremely impressed by her strength in this season of Re:Zero. I feel like it wasn’t shown off as much in previous anime seasons, but it’s really brought to fruition in this one.
To deliver the finishing blow, Reinhard Van Astrea arrives and sends Greed flying into the sky and then flying into the ground. Since all his bones are broken, Regulus ends up drowning underwater.
After his death, Emilia unfreezes all of his wives who are finally free from his grasp.
It’s unbelievable (and honestly a miracle) that the three of them defeat Greed. He’s nearly invincible. It’s all thanks to Subaru who found out his secret.
Without even knowing it, Emilia got revenge for her loved ones.
I wonder which Sin Archbishop will die next.
